New UPI Rules Take Effect August 1: Daily Limits, Auto-Pay Restrictions, and More

New UPI rules affecting GPay, PhonePe, and Paytm users from August 1, 2025

🔹 Intro:
Starting August 1, 2025, UPI users in India will see major changes in how they interact with popular payment apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm. From balance check limits to strict auto-payment windows, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is rolling out new rules designed to reduce server load and improve transaction efficiency.

Balance Checks Now Capped at 50 Per Day

Until now, users could check their bank account balance through UPI apps as often as they liked. Starting August 1, this will change.

Each UPI app will now allow users to check their balance only 50 times per day. Beyond that, the app will stop responding to balance requests. The move is aimed at curbing excessive API calls and managing infrastructure load.

Auto-Payments Allowed Only During Fixed Time Slots

Recurring payments such as EMIs, utility bills, and subscriptions will now be processed only during specific time windows.

The three approved time slots for UPI auto-payments are:

  • Before 10:00 AM
  • Between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM
  • After 9:30 PM

Each auto-payment mandate will be allowed one initial attempt, followed by a maximum of three retries if it fails.

Apps Can’t Auto-Check Balances Anymore

UPI apps will no longer be allowed to check user balances automatically in the background. The user must manually initiate the request. Any automated background requests from apps will be rejected.

Account List Viewing Capped at 25 Times Daily

Users will also be limited to viewing their linked account list only 25 times per day through UPI apps. The change is intended to cut down unnecessary backend API traffic, thereby reducing server strain.

Failed Transaction Status Checks Limited to Three Attempts

If a UPI transaction fails, users will now only be allowed to check its status up to three times per day. Additionally, each status check must be spaced at least 90 seconds apart.

According to NPCI, this is to help improve the success rate of reversals and retries, while easing network congestion.

Public Reaction: Mixed Views on Control vs Convenience

Local users have expressed mixed feelings about the upcoming restrictions. While some see them as necessary to keep India’s growing digital payment system efficient and reliable, others are concerned about potential inconveniences.

📌 If you rely on UPI for daily transactions, make sure you're aware of these rule changes and share them with your friends and family.
